This is in no way a political or emotive article about what we can do to find global warming solutions or stop climate change; I’m on about the direct effect global warming and climate change will have on ski weather and snow levels in the next ninety years.

Let’s admit it – the world is warming up at an exponential rate whether we like it or not (excuse the pun). Let’s avoid the slow, threatening music soundtrack with Al Gore commentary and the occasional crash of thunder. We are not discussing the apocalypse here. It’s the effect that global warming will have on snow levels that is a concern as a skier. Last winter had some of the biggest snow dumps ever – check this clip which demonstrates the current ski weather trend.

This century will see an enormous increase in global temperature, as high as 6.4°C according to reliable estimates. This is approximately five times the temperature surge during the last century. Many people think that snow levels will go down as rain takes over, but this is not definitely the case.

Let’s just take a brief and simplistic look at how the climate affects our ski weather. For rain and snow think ‘precipitation’. Water vapour or hot wet air ascends from the equator, warmed up by the sun. This water vapour forms the vast circular weather systems in both hemispheres as it cools and drops down, propelled by the earth’s rotational forces.

For the sake of argument let’s confine our discussion to the weather systems in the northern hemisphere where they move from west to east and the greatest proportion of the preciption occurs as it hits a landmass. In this scenario, as the moist air arrives at the mountains on the west side of America and the Alps in Europe, it rises up, cools down and falls as snow and rain.

So if the climate gets hotter there will be more precipitation in these areas as the oceans will evaporate more readily. But will it be mostly rain or mostly snow? This is the question. If the Earth’e temperature rises by 6.4°C in the next ninety years it will mean that the rain snow location on a mountain will move higher. If for example the snow level on a mountainside is at 1000 metres, by the century end this will have risen to 2000 metres as the temperature decreases by roughly 6.5°C per 1000 metres. The precipitation will be greater and the rain/snow level wil be moving up the mountainside at a speed of about 10 metres each year.

Well, that’s it then – more snow. But it’s not that simple. What effect, for example, will the melting Greenland glaciers have on the Gulf Stream? It may not be the only question, but this is the biggest. Known as the Atlantic conveyor this life giving current brings warm water up from the tropics past the western seaboard of Europe. Thirteen thousand years ago it stopped flowing. And why? A huge lake of cold freshwater burst its banks in eastern Canada and dropped into the North Atlantic, halting the Gulf Stream almost immediately. The same thing could happen if the accelerated melting of the Greenland icecap pours a massive amount of cold freshwater into the Gulf Stream and clunk – it switches off. Making your own compost has become a popular past time with todays gardeners and as an alternative to chemical fertilization of crops, its also very good for the environment.  Compost is organic and as such contains no chemicals or nitrates.

When starting out in the garden, a common question is how one should make your own compost?

The most important thing when choosing your compost bin or barrel, is to be sure that it has not been used previously for toxic chemicals or other hazardous materials. This could contaminate the compost and subsequently poison or otherwise harm you or your plants.

Generally, a plastic barrel of about 55 gallons will work quite well. Many people choose barrels that are food safe. If you are interested in recycling, you may be able to get your barrel from a food service organization or a restaurant. If it has been used for deep frying oil, you will need to scrub it clean to get all traces of food out of the barrel.

Once you have your compost barrel cleaned and ready to go, you should drill half inch holes all over the barrel, in about six to nine rows. Space the holes approximately four to six inches apart, and even drill a few holes in the bottom of the barrel to allow for the drainage of excess moisture.

Make sure that if you are opening your compost container from the top the lid is hinged as well as latched. Many people turn their compost by rolling the barrel around their yard, which could be disastrous if the lid should come open.

Obviously, compost barrels are not the only things you can use to make your own compost. You can also build or purchase a compost bin, or even better a compost tumbler.  A tumbler is the best option if you can afford one, as the task of turning the compost regularly becomes much easier.  To accelerate the composting process you need to ensure the compost is aerated properly.  The best way to ensure this is to turn the compost over on a regular basis.  With a tumbler all you have to do is turn a handle, as opposed to turn it with a fork.  I know which method I prefer!
